The silver KATA razor standing in its stand on a pale stone sink ledge in early morning light

The 30° safety razor

Single-blade shaving, without the learning curve.

The blade sits at 30 degrees inside the head, so the angle is already right. Lay the razor flat on your cheek, tip the handle out a touch, and shave.

The razor

One razor, two finishes

Brushed silver or matte graphite. Same head, same 30 degree angle, same knurled handle, five blades in the box. Pick the one that suits your shelf.

How it works

The head does the hard part.

A classic safety razor leaves the angle to you. KATA holds it for you, stroke after stroke.

  1. 01

    The angle is built in

The blade sits at a fixed 30 degrees inside the head. You don't have to find the angle or hold it steady through the stroke. It's already there.

  2. 02

Lay it flat, tip it out

Rest the head flat on your cheek, handle close to your face, then tip the handle out a touch until the blade starts to cut. That's the whole technique.

  3. 03

    A blade that stays put

The blade is clamped rigid between the base plate and the top cap, so it doesn't flex mid-stroke. One blade per stroke, held still.

  4. 04

    Standard blades, sold almost everywhere

It takes any standard double-edge blade. No proprietary cartridge, no hunting for refills that only fit one handle.

The angle

30 degrees, set in metal.

Look at the head from the side and you can see it: the top cap slopes down toward the front edge, and the blade follows it. The closed comb and the flat base rest on your skin, and only a thin line of edge shows at the front. The angle is decided before you pick the razor up.

The shave

Three steps, every morning

That's the idea behind the name: learn the form once, then repeat it without thinking.

  1. The shaving brush loaded with lather on a white bowl, the graphite razor standing beside it

    01

    Lather up

Wet your face with warm water. Whip up a lather with a brush, soap or cream, and paint it on in small circles so the hairs stand up.

  2. A man shaving in the morning light, the razor laid almost flat on his lathered cheek

    02

Lay it flat, tip it out

Rest the head flat on your cheek, then tip the handle out a little until the blade starts to cut. Short strokes with the grain, no pressure, rinse often.

  3. The silver razor in its tan sleeve on an open canvas toiletry bag, in a hotel room

    03

Stand it up, or pack it

Rinse the razor, shake it off and drop it into its stand, head up, to dry. Traveling? Let it dry, slide the sleeve over the head and pack it.

Which blades fit the razor?

Any standard double-edge (DE) safety razor blade, the classic shape with a slot down the middle, sold almost everywhere. Our box of 100 fits, and so does any other standard DE blade.

What comes in the box with the razor?

The razor in three pieces (handle, base plate, top cap), five standard double-edge blades to get started and a quick start guide. The brush, the stand, the sleeve and the box of 100 blades are sold separately.

Any tips for the first few shaves?

Go slowly. Lather well, lay the head flat on your cheek, then tip the handle out a touch until the blade starts to cut. Use short strokes with the grain, with light pressure, and rinse often. The fixed angle takes the guesswork out; the light hand comes with a few mornings of practice.

How do I get rid of used blades?

Drop them into a closed metal container or a blade bank as you take them out of the razor. When it's full, close it and follow your local rules for sharp metal waste. Never put loose blades in household trash or recycling.

How can I reach you?

Write to us from our contact page. We read every message and reply within 2 business days.

The angle is already in the razor.
